Boost immunity by making these everyday basics a habit.

MAKE SLEEP A PRIORITY: Make an effort to get 8 hours of sleep a night. You may think you function just fine on 5 or 6, but over time your body becomes sleep deprived which compromises your immune system.

EAT COLORFUL FOOD: Load your plate with a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables. Each is unique as they provide the body with antioxidants that boost immunities. Lean proteins also fuel a strong immune function.

DON’T JUST SIT THERE: Daily physical activity is the secret to a healthy life. Walking as little as 20 minutes a day is all it takes to help circulate the cells and antibodies throughout your system and give your immune system the boost it needs to fight off germs.

In addition,
* The elimination of sugar from your diet can also strengthen/improve the immune system.
* Eliminate or reduce exposure to dangerous toxins in your environment. E.g. purchasing cleaning products that are safe and non-toxic
* properly deal with stress - chronic (long term) stress will suppress your immune system function
* Body Detox/Body cleansing will Strengthen Your Immune System
* Drink plenty of Water

Balance.

Routine Sleep Pattern - go to sleep earlier - wake up earlier. Get your body so used to a sleep pattern that you can wake up without a clock

Remove the toxins from your life - as much as possible remove the toxins in your own home ( there is not alot you can do to avoid the toxins outside of your house except for moving to the country and opting for eco-vacations rather than big city vacations. We did this by replacing just about every cleaner in our house with Basic H ( a Shaklee product ). It works and it is so non-toxic that I can even wash my vegetables/fruits with it ( in its most diluted form ).

Drink filtered watered - get a water filter pitcher and keep filtered water ready to go in your fridge.

Take your Vitamins - there is on going research about the benefit of vitamins but most of those research papers never tell you which brand of vitamins they studied - it makes a difference. Again I recommend Shaklee vitamins as they have years of science behind them and they have the greatest bioavailability of just about any vitamin ( meaning the pill goes in and is injested and put to work instead of just travelling through your system and going out the other end ).

Build up your core muscles - read the Alexander Technique.

Don't sweat the small stuff - stress reaks havic on our immune systems. Take a yoga class or study zen - read the serenity prayer daily.

Then no matter what happens live each day with zest and enthusiasm. There are no guarantees.

I really believe it's Traditional Nutrition as described by the Weston A. Price Foundation. It's based on a several-year long study of many ethnic groups across the globe; and ongoing analysis of research. Price took a team of researchers around the globe and looked at groups in which part of the groups were eating their traditional diets, and other parts were eating a Westernized diet. Researchers spent time measuring all kinds of health indicators.

What they found were that the traditional groups with the best health indicators shared certain dietary factors. What follows is a partial list. Their website is HUGE--many weeks' worth of reading, with good scientific journal citations to back up what they say--citations from studiest in JAMA, NEJM, the Lancet, and specialist journals.

The list of shared factors:

Source of calcium: either milk from pasturefed cows or goats, or the water source had a high calcium content (glacial run-off or lime deposits).

Animal protein, at least some of which was consumed raw: raw milk/cheese/butter; caviar/roe; straight raw meat, or raw eggs.

Lacto-fermentation of vegetables--traditional sauerkraut and relishes, as a form of preservation.

Bone broth used in cooking for a wide range of optimally bio-available minerals.

Grains either fermented (as in sourdough and some European breads, or beer), soaked (as in oatmeal) or sprouted before use. Grain for these groups was a very minor part of the diet.

The very healthiest groups reserved certain high-nutrition foods for those of childbearing age, both men and women, particularly seafoods. Some inland groups even had treaties with coastal groups so that even if they were at war, the foods would still be available to them.

These groups also ate very little in the way of sweeteners and no refined flour or sugar; no grainfed meats; no canned or jarred foods; no carbonated drinks.

Some other factors the Foundation has looked at are amount and quality of sleep; exercise; and environmental toxins.

Another important thing would be to try to avoid wiping out your beneficial bacteria using antibiotics. Taking a good probiotic helps keep your gut colonies healthy and replenished. Many of the unfriendly bacteria thrive on blood sugar, so keeping that under control is important, too.

It's entirely possible to eat this way in the U.S., because it is a growing movement. My family has been doing this for close to 9 years, with very good results.

First, I am not a doctor and have no medical experience. I did find an excellent and easy to understand article on the immune system from here;

http://www.niaid.nih.gov/Publications/immune/the_immune_system.pdf

I also found an article here that lists ways to boost the immune system,

http://naturalmedicine.suite101.com/article.cfm/10_ways_to_boost_immune_health

I don't know whether this is good info or not, because this article from a doctor suggests that immune boosters are a scam;

I have an auto-immune disease, and my doctor said to do all the normal things: exercise, eat right (fruits, vegetables, milk), and get plenty of sleep. I will say that if I don't get good sleep starting early in the night, after a couple days, my hands will ache. Sometimes I need 9 hours of sleep, but it's worth it to be healthy.

To keep your immune system healthy all you really need is regular exercise, plenty of sleep, and a good multivitamin. For complete total body wellness, it's a bit more complicated, but for the immune system itself those are the keys.
