How to fall asleep quickly?

It's almost 2AM where I'm at. I was up having friends over for Oscar party. I've always had trouble winding down at night, even on regular days. Can anyone help on suggestions to fall asleep quickly? I count sheep, I count numbers, I do "progressive relaxation," yet my mind is still frisky as a monkey in July. Ideas?

Good sleep practices are what you need to institute on a regular basis. On the short term Ambien and other sleeping pills can help. For a long term solution, visualization and relaxation exercises are the best solution. In order for this to have any real level of effectiveness, you need to do it on a regular basis - even when you are not having trouble sleeping. The repetition of doing the same routine every night, will get your body conditioned to a certain behavior-in this case falling asleep. The visualization works best if it is progressive, i.e., decorating a house, building something, etc.

• All answers were good, but this one seems like the one i can most easily implement in my daily life. I don't always have 2 hours to devote to winding down, unfortunately.

Good luck. I've tried all the things that you mentioned. Surprisingly, one thing that works for me is Equate pain reliever PM from WalMart. I don't think that it is habit forming, but I would still use it sparingly.

Most 'PM' meds have the generic form of Benadryl. This has a side effect of sedation. You might as well take that instead of 2 drugs - if you don't need the pain relief. It works but avoid using regularly. I recommend exercise - but not right before bed. Usually a workout earlier in the day helps me sleep at night.

Sounds good. Does someone sell a generic form of Benadryl? What's it called?

Generic Benadryl is known as diphenhydramine. Any chain drugstore or grocery store, including Wal*Mart, is likely to have a generic version of it on their shelves.

This Web site does one of Benadryl's uses as short-term treatment for insomnia. So, enzoinsc, you are right on the money there.

Well I had similar problem. I have some books which are so dry. So these days if I don't get sleep, I just read one of those books. I automatically will end up sleeping 10-15 minutes. Or exhaust myself doing exercises which also results in sleep due to exhaustion.
Hope this is useful

i totally agree with karj.

reading a dull book (such as law books) puts me to sleep in a matter of minutes no matter how tired i really am.

but then i have never really had trouble falling asleep. i do a lot of exercise so that also might have something to do with it.

I don't like the idea of taking 'sleep aids' to fall asleep faster.

Are you experiencing a high level of stress or anxiety (from work, personal life, etc)? This will most certainly keep you tossing and turning at night (from personal experience).

Maybe you should try to wind down a couple of hours before bedtime. Drink a nice warm drink (not anything caffeinated, obviously) and try to do something that's not too involved.

Reading a book always helps. Though a dull book helps, why not pick up an interesting one as long as you're reading anyway? :) Your eyes will get tired enough after a couple of pages and should help you fall asleep.

Also, try to keep a regular sleep schedule so that your body's internal clock will naturally know when it's time to sleep and you should sleep at that time as much as you can. Some lifestyles aren't compatible with this, obviously.

Sleep aids are drugs and do not address the underlying reasons why you are having trouble going to sleep.

I appreciate your answer. Lots of good information and suggestions in here.

For me, if I'm reading something remotely interesting, especially fiction, it will keep me up even later. I get so wrapped up in the story that I can't put it down.
