Whenever I have switched plans, it has always taken place during an open enrollment period (which usually happens annually, I believe) and is effective at the start of the new coverage period. It would probably depend on your provider and/or your company's arrangement with the provider, I would think, if you wanted to switch in the middle of a coverage period, but I don't have any experience trying to make that happen.

Best to just contact your provider and get the ball rolling with someone there who knows the intricacies of the plans, I'd say...
