How do you heal an injured gluteus and back of the leg?

I pulled or tore the back part of my leg from the glute down to my knee while running. It's been sore for almost a year, but I've been running on it. I stopped running for a month twice expecting it to go away, and after running 6 miles on Monday and Wednesday, its killing me again!

sounds like ligament problems. I have never been a runner but have been a weightlifter for years and have had my fair share of ligament problems. One severe ligament injury that I had in my wrist and forearm took six months to heal. That was tough to endure to put no strain on that arm for that long but that is what it took. Now to the meat of my answer; this is what has worked for me in the past with less than severe ligament injurys. I would increase the amount of carbs in the diet as the nutrients and minerals in carbs can help with the healing process, and by carbs I mean good, healthy carbs. Things like whole grains, whole wheat pastas, organic breads and fruits are a good souce of carbs. Also high doses of L-Glutamine and L-Arginine, these are both free form aminno acids that will help with the repair of muscle tissue and soft tissues. Your muscles are actually made up of over 60% L-Glutimine. A good source of naturally accuring L-Glutimine is cottage cheese, the active ingredient is casein, which is very high in L-glutimine. You can find both L-Glutimine and L-Arginine at most health food stores. But like I said if it is a severe injury what you need is to not work that group of muscles and tendons and let them heal and it may take months. Also to, a good thing to do is get a neoprene leg wrap and wear that during the day to give support to those muscles and tendons. I hope you can heal quickly as I know how hard it is to be down with injury instead of doing what is a passion. Take good care!

Forgive me for asking the obvious, but have you discussed your condition with a doctor? I recommend you see a professional podiatrist or orthopedic doctor they would be able to determine if you have a serious injury, like a torn ligament that requires surgery . It is also possible a doctor may simply suggest you try orthotics or physical therapy. You could also try a different type and/or brand of sneaker if you haven't already. In general, the longer an injury exists, the longer it will take to heal. I hope you feel better soon.

Yes I spoke with my doctor who suggested a leg wrap and to not run on it for a couple months similar to what rosshann said.
