Menthol is derives from extracts used to produce a number of peppermint-flavored products, including mouth wash and toothpaste. It is an additive in menthol cigarettes applied in liquid forum during manufacturing, (or in the case of Camel Crush, a capsule within the filter that is ruptured when depressed). Health effects are more or less the same for regular cigarettes.
The only potentially more negative health effects I have come across, is that some studies seem to indicate those who smoke menthol cigarettes are less likely to quit... which would seem to indicate a higher level of enjoyment, in my opinion.

Personally, I love menthol cigarettes. I think they're better tasting and a more enjoyable smoke. I also think they're better for smoking when you're sick because menthol opens the airways and relieves soreness in your throat.
If you have to smoke, smoke menthols.
