Have you ever had a 'belly button' or umbilical hernia?

And yes, I'm asking because I have a 'friend' that I think may have one.  :)

Last week, I began upping my game at the gym with my old regimen which is pretty strenuous.  I think I may have overdone the ab workout.

Over the last few days, I've noticed a swelling on the left side of my belly button.  It was like a little round nodule growing into the cavity of the belly button.  This swelling is watery, not hard.  However, directly above my naval, when I push down, there is a new hard mass that has rather suddenly appeared.

None of this is particularly painful ... just weird, definitely not correct.  It also all came on suddenly.

According to links I've seen on our page here: Hernia   this may require minor surgery to correct.  I'm scheduling an appointment with my doctor tomorrow to have this looked at.

My question is this: Has anyone here been through this?  What can I expect?

Mahalo in advance for any answers -- I'm suddenly much more glad we built this! :)

I personally have never had one but I have known a few people who have. The "repair" surgery (forgive me for forgetting the technical term) was an outpatient deal. There was minimal pain for my friend and there was a lifting restriction (duh). His was much larger than the one you describe, being about 4 inches long. They repaired it with a mesh that your muscle and tissues will grow around, making it stronger in hopes that it won't happen again. Good luck with it!

Good to hear it's outpatient ... this was exactly the kind of 'war story' i wanted to hear.
