You can purchase this in the pill form or as herbal tea.

Goldenseal is another herb that acts as a natural antibiotic, and can be taken to help your body in its battle against the cold. It helps to relieve nasal, as well as lung congestion, among other symptoms.

Eating a bit of dark chocolate can help your cough. Theobromine, a compound found in chocolate, has been found to be even more effective than codeine for suppressing coughs, and it won't make you drowsy or constipated.

You can also tame your cough with honey. Before bed take two teaspoons of honey and take 500 mg of Ester C 30 minutes prior to lying down to quiet your cough and give your immune system a little lift.

Garlic, as well as onion, is sometimes taken for the relief of congestion and minor infections. They are good in helping reduce the amount of mucous in the nasal cavities too. Garlic is also said to aid in the cleansing of the body's blood.

Mix six pressed garlic cloves with hot water, and gargle with this garlic tea twice a day, for three days. The warm liquid soothes inflamed tissues, while the garlic has antimicrobial properties that fight pain-causing bacteria.
Another sure-fire remedy for a sore throat is to gargle with a strong solution of table salt and warm water. Gargle several times a day. The salt helps to relieve that uncomfortable burning in your throat.
Natural zinc lozenges are another one of nature's sore throat-fighters, and can be purchased at your local health food store.
You can also purchase a bottle of colloidal Silver nasal spray at your local health store. It is most beneficial in moisturizing and soothing dry nasal passages, and thus helping to ward off the common cold virus.
Reduce your fever by drinking linden flower tea. It controls your body temperature by stimulating the hypothalamus, and also dilates your blood vessels and induces sweating.

Pick up the dried herb at a health food store or herb shop. Steep one tablespoon of dried linden flower in a cup of hot water for 15 minutes. Stash makes a linden flower tea, too. Drink this tea three to four times a day. If your fever is over 102° F, take a tepid bath to cool off the body.

G'day Megan M, Thank you for your question.
According to the Mayo Clinic, these home remedies can help:
* drink plenty of water and/or juice to reduce dehydration;
* gargling salt water can help relieve a scratchy throat;
* chicken soup;
* use a humidifier - cold viruses thrive in dry conditions - but clean it regularly.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

I have found that mincing about a 1/2 to 1 tsp of garlic, coating it with olive oil, and swallowing it whole--followed by a glass of ice water for a numbing chaser--helps shorten the duration of the cold. Zinc is also a popular way to shorten the common cold. As for making it less miserable, why not do what I did for the past couple days: curl up on your couch with a nice warm blanket, some chicken soup, and watch some old Donald Duck cartoons. :-)

As a mom of four who tries to minimize medicine consumption it has been my experience that home remedies can be very effective.
To help with congestion we use saline drops and Vicks Vapo rub. Steam either via humidifier or a hot, steamy bathroom really helps with cough. A teaspoon of honey at night also helps with cough. Be sure not to give it to children under the age of one however. Hot chicken noodle also helps with congestion and credence to its effectively has been backed up in scientific studies

What you can try is making a smoothie out of: Apples
Bananas
Fresh squeezed lemon
Orange juice
Honey
And ginger
Mix all that in a blender and you got your natural remedy!
Hope it helps.
