There are a lot of things you can do with orange (and other citrus) peels.. and... composting is DEFINITELY one of them.

For some reason, the idea that you shouldn't or can't compost your orange peels is a pervasive myth that simply isn't true.

As far as what you can do with orange peels before composting the remains?

Use them as a potpourri, use them for some zest (bits of peel for flavoring), make orange peel candy, extract the oil for use in one of many ways (or at least use them to help add scent/flavor to various fluids)..

Anything and everything organic can and should be composted or digested. Nothing organic should be sent to landfills; anaerobic (without oxygen) decomposition as takes place in a landfill produces methane gas as a byproduct -- something that should not happen in aerobic environments like in composting; methane is a significant contribution to the greenhouse effect and is significantly more potent than carbon dioxide in this capacity. In addition, as I'm sure you might have already considered since you are thinking about this -- our waste today, is our food tomorrow; composting food products directly improves the health of soils and continues the cycle.

Hello, thanks for using Mahalo Answers.
This is a misconception. Orange peels are compostable because it was part of an an orange. Organic material will decompose. However, keep in mind that too much orange peel in your compost is not recommended.

i've never heard that you can't compost them. if you don't want to compost them, you can use them to repel some creatures, like cats and opossums from your garden and/or planters.
