Does operating a Xerox machine with the lid open shorten the life of the machine?

leaving the top open and using a xerox machine will deplete the toner quickley, and make the machine work poorly requiring a tech sooner than required. that's why all images should at least have a blank white paper as a background of the image you wish to copy.

I don't think so. I worked for kinkos for years and have never had that. We would leave the lid open all the time.
