Telepediatrics is already the busiest medical specialty of telephone triage nursing.
Many major insurance companies, such as Kaiser Permanente, United Health Care, and others hire nurses for this type of work. There are a few companies that hires nurses to do this from a home office, although experience and training are required. The services are sold to independent medical offices. The services may be utilized outside of regular office hours. Tested medical guidelines and decision trees tare used to help assist with recommendations and teaching, although most often at least 3 years of pediatric experience is required in addition to an active RN license. Complex computer programs are used in order to assist with referrals, education, rapid answering, and consultation with the MD or other provider by email. There is no video assist with this type of telepediatrics.
There are medical providers, such as pediatric MD's and NP's that use a video form of communication with patients. This is used more often in extremely rural areas, or other areas where there is a shortage of providers. Video medicine is much less common at this time, although growing.
