And I remember that commercial. He seemed much more sober in it, so they must have had to keep shooting for hours, until he sobered up a bit. Poor extras. Poor crew!
Thanks for the good laugh!

at that time, nobody except bowery bums drank california wines. or so i hear, i was 10 at the time! the point is... the california vineyards had an uphill battle just to be taken seriously. a name like welles' really lent some credibility to the product.
if you haven't seen it, Citizen Kane is perhaps the best film ever made. If you've seen Citizen Kane, then rush out and rent The Third Man. He's barely in it and he didn't even direct it, but it's such a great film with a wonderful music track.
Then sit back and enjoy a barrel or two of paul mason's best. he'll sell no wine, before you pay for it.

Just how many cases of the stuff did he drink before they started shooting? I'm assuming that he felt he needed to "get behind" any product he was endorsing... And I remember that commercial. He seemed much more sober in it, so they must have had to keep shooting for hours, until he sobered up a bit. Poor extras. Poor crew!
Thanks for the good laugh!

these videos are SO MUCH BETTER if you actually saw the "good" takes that they ran on television in the early '70's. at that time, nobody except bowery bums drank california wines. or so i hear, i was 10 at the time! the point is... the california vineyards had an uphill battle just to be taken seriously. a name like welles' really lent some credibility to the product.
