TOUGH tough call here. My finalists would be Chappelle, Hedberg and Cross. (Yes, i know, I know...hardcore standup fans are all supposed to worship Bill Hicks...He was funny but it's just not my particular brand of comedy. Though for the record, I'm also not a huge Denis Leary fan and agree that Leary basically ripped Hicks' persona.)

If we were awarding who had created the best TV shows, Chappelle and Cross would be neck-and-neck for the similarly-brilliant "Chappelle's Show" and "Mr. Show," but as far as purely judging based on stand-up, Hedberg had a unique, idiosyncratic and completely ingenious style all his own. (Plus, I saw him once at the Largo and he sat down next to me at the bar and chatted for a while afterwards). Miss that guy.

If I was born 10 years earlier I would probably vote for Hicks, but I feel Chappelle is the best comedian of my generation and he's got my vote.

I do love Mitch, but I've got to throw my vote in for Bill Hicks. The comedian philosopher, as he demonstrates near the end of this clip, and who may other comedians cite as a major influence.
