They're all funny but Whoopi, Roseanne, and Tina Fey stand out because they've also contributed a lot to comedy writing, Fey as SNL head writer for the few brief years (counting recent times only) when that show was actually funny, plus on 30 Rock. For this reason I vote for Fey.

(There are of course a ton of other women - Wanda Sykes is hilarious, and Margaret Cho, Kathy Najimy, and Lily Tomlin have been influential, just to name a few).

Here is a recent 30 Rock:

And here is a 'classic' SNL sketch that Fey has copped to writing though she's not in it. Stupid double entrendres that manage to be entertaining because of clever writing:

Asker's Rating:
• Thanks for participating, you get best answer, but Whoopi won the round.

My vote goes to Tina Fey, for her hilarious impression of Sarah Palin.
(Apologies to anyone who can't view the following video because they don't live in the U. S. This is the only legal footage of the sketch on the web.)

oh my gosh...where is Ellen on this list? This playoff is sexist! I'm just kidding about that, but I do think Ellen should have been included somewhere...along with probably a few other females.

From this list, I will vote for Whoopi.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG IS SIMPLY THE BEST!!!!!

With 108 acting credits, 16 producer credits and 5 soundtracks,
236 appearances, 10 writing credits, 253 articles written about her,
one Oscar, 37 other wins and 41 nominations,
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000155/
this multi-talented comedienne extraordinaire has had a fantastic career -
and it is still going strong as chair of the TV show The View with Barbara Walters.

Even Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum has immortalized her:

With sold out comedy tours in major North American cities appearing
just by herself sitting on a stool - we KNOW this comedienne is very funny
and well loved by the people.

I have to go with Samantha Bee, though I would say she doesn't have as much mainstream appeal as others on the list.

Got to throw a vote in for my fellow Canadian, Samantha Bee. Unfortunately, as a Canadian, I can't view the videos on ''The Daily Show'' website, but I've provided a link below to her bio and video archive.

Gilda Radner, hands down. She was the most versatile, crazy, hysterically funny woman of all!

One more for 'Whoopi Goldberg".

Whoopi is probably the only one to win an Academy Award, a Tony, a Grammy and Mark Twain Prize for Humor.

Her performance in Ghost is one of the rare instances, when it got academy award as well as it made us laugh.

My vote goes to Gilda:

Can't imagine how fun it would have been to hang around her and Gene Wilder together in the '70s...holy crap...Anyway, she was incredibly talented...A brilliant all-around comedian.
