Dark red purplish color is best, free from hollows, bruises and heat marks. Density of weight. Brightness of color. These guidelines should help you.
If really stumped, ask the produce person to pick you out a good one you eat now.
good luck

Color is the first indication that pomegranate fruit is ripe and ready to be picked. The fruit should be a bright, deep red with no green color, though it may have a few streaks of yellow gold.

Does the color of a pomegranate's skin give any indication of the quality of the fruit inside?
They had some really huge pomegranates at the store today, but the skin was very pale, not the usual deep garnet red, so I hesitated to buy one.

Yes, the color is a good indicator of ripeness but it is not the only indicator. Size and weight are also good to go by. When it is the 'size of a softball' it is about ready to be picked. The heavier the better. --quote--
