You should never store them in direct sunlight, as this will short their life. They should be stored in a dark and dry location that is between 40 and 85 degrees F. They should always be stored in an upright position. You should also not store them too far in advance, to keep them fresh. I personally keep mine in a desk draw, that I rarely go into, and I only keep one or two spares of black, and only one each of each color that my printer needs.
