Do you switch computers ever, or always the same one?
On messenger, go to Tools > Options > Sign in. There should be an option called "use the same display picture and personal message wherever I sign in". Make sure this IS checked. Make sure it's checked on every computer you use. If not, it will switch your DP (which could be nothing) whenever you sign in next time. If you sign in with a mobile phone you will have the same problem, but there is no way to fix it other than to fix it whenever you sign in next.
