If you're telling someone to add you on Facebook, it's easier to say facebook.com/yourusername than to say facebook.com/profile.php?id=1234567890.

If you have a tough name to spell, searching for you might also be difficult. Having the ability to set a vanity URL to be anything that you want is powerful - it gives you an easier way to tell people about your profile.

Also, as a bonus, it's easier to remember for yourself - if you have a website, for example, it's easier to remember a vanity URL than to copy and paste that profile.php?id=... url.

I don't see what's "vanity" about it at all. It's the same as any webpage, you'd like to have a short easy-to-remember URL if you can.

1 - Because if you do not take yours someone else might take it
2 - Because if your avatar on Facebook is already of the first name last name variety, most search engines might already find you - so selecting a username of the first name lastanme variety has no real impact on your privacy
3 - Because it make you easier to find by your friends
