I've used various versions of Norton / Symantec antivirus over the years and while most of the times it's been trouble-free, there have been some cases where it's dug in to a particular computer like a tick, leaving various pieces that must be manually uninstalled.
A program which has instructions on manual removal, prompting the user to dive into the registry or hunt and delete files (for cases when the program's own installer can't clean house on its own) doesn't bode well.

I'd suggest installing a different antivirus program, for example ESET NOD32 Antivirus (see link below). If you want to just get rid of Norton completely use the Windows Cleanup tool. This will clean out all traces of the software. Just follow the instructions given on the page. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.. Also I would suggest downloading Avast Home Edition "free". As a computer technician I have used this software for over 5 years and it has never failed to block a virus attack. Just make sure as with all antivirus programs you update your virus definitions once a week. Hope this helps
