Either they scaled out their cluster or implemented a new load balancing solution. And they have not implemented sticky sessions. So depending on which box your hit traffic is being directed to, you are either staying logged in or getting logged off. This usually happens the first time you hit a box, and I can imagine they probably have 100s in their cluster. It can get annoying because even the getting logged off is not consistent.

The same discussion at Macrumors that is referenced here also mentions that the 'webclips' feature in Safari can cause problems due to cookies being deleted.
One final note; I have noticed similar behaviour. Since sometime late last week I have found that when I visit Facebook at work I have to login the first time I visit, and it is the same when I return home. On my first visit to Facebook I have to login even though the 'Remember me' box is ticked when I login. Previously I could go for weeks without having to re-enter my password.

I have several computers and multiple browsers I use with FaceBook (work, home, laptop, iPhone) and I've noticed if I use several of them I lose my "stay logged in" status.

Why does Facebook log me out every half our or so? I've clicked off "keep me logged in" -- very, very annoying.

Using chat clients to login to Facebook chat can cause this to happen. Adium is one common culprit. The same discussion at Macrumors that is referenced here also mentions that the 'webclips' feature in Safari can cause problems due to cookies being deleted.

I don't know enough about either app to do more than take a WAG at this, but I suspect that one of them is logging in repeatedly, causing the Facebook API to force a password re-entry for you. Probably the result of anti-bot protection at Facebook.
(I think my problem is related to cookie expiration.)

I would guess that the number of "keep me logged in" cookies allowed per user is capped. If you have too many "keep me logged in" cookies they are deleting some of the matching database records associated with those cookie forcing you to reauthenticate. I have several computers and multiple browsers I use with FaceBook (work, home, laptop, iPhone) and I've noticed if I use several of them I lose my "stay logged in" status.

Quite similar issue though not exactly as what I have. I enabled my Greasemonkey (Firefox) and Facebook colorizer, which I thought very annoying at times whenever I browse then it goes back to the Facebook homepage. The thing is, I like the Facebook colorizer while browsing Facebook...it makes my day colorful!!!
