My sense is that Facebook recommendations are based on either 1) direct connections to your friends, and 2) the connections of people in other groups you belong to.
So, if some of your friends are in LGBT groups, FB may recommend them. Or, if you are in a group that has lots of members who are also in an LGBT group, FB may recommend it.
When I joined a group from my old middle school, FB recommended a group from the nearby elementary school, since lots of the people in the former were also in the latter. That's pretty much it.
Plus, so what? If you're not interested, ignore the recommendations.
