Why do so many baseball teams have birds as their mascots?

No reason, other than that they are popular team names. Kind of like wildcat mascots, or tigers and bulldogs. It is just a name that a lot of people seem to like. I don't think there is any real official reason, just that they are popular. I don't believe it has anything to do with the history of the team or baseball.  Hope this answered what you want.
