4 Reasons:

#1
Money

#2
Take advantage of the dance craze fueled by shows such as "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Dancing With the Stars"

#3
Capitalize on the nostalgia of the original movie since Hollywood seems to be remaking everything these days (even a new "Fame" movie is on the way)

#4
To torture husbands and boyfriends around the world as they are dragged by their ladies to 90 minutes of a tattered improbable plot centered around romance and dance performances.

I suppose this is pay back for every action flick, war movie and car racing movie women have been dragged to over the years while rolling their eyes.
