Dan White indeed was the assassin. It was Nov 27, 1978
There were a few ironies that tied into his death.
Since it was within days of Jonestown's mass suicide and there were many member saying that survivors in the Bay area were likely to strike out, at first the news associated his murder as part of the Jonestown cult problem. The books written immediately after the mass suicide mention that it was believed by surviving cultists and blogs found today still try to tie the two events together because Harvey supported the Temple and the Temple helped get him elected.
When he was running for office, the People's Temple was one of the strongest forces in the Bay area and Jones had them pass out info for him.
So his connection to one of the scariest cults in American history is interesting.
Next came the "twinkie defense" idea in American pop culture. Dan White didn't actually say it was twinkie's that caused him to kill George Moscone and Harvery Milk.
That myth somehow grew from his "dimished capacity defense" in which his diet was only mentioned by the media and a few shrinks. Dan himself talked to someon about Ho-Ho's and Ding Dong's NOT twinkies.
So Harvey Milk's murder ties itself into two other pieces of American pop culture and history that are high on the "oddest" things we've seen.....Jonestown and the myth of the twinkie defense.
