Many spammers (internet porn stars, included) follow you, probably hoping that you will follow them. If you follow them, their updates (spam) will appear on your timeline, advertising their product. To combat this, I protect my updates and block people who I don't know from following me.

excellent advice. there seem to be a few ODD #!@#@##!!! posts "from twitter" on Mahalo that could be spamming robots. Admins I bet your genius coders are on top of this one... :) .... good luck! best wishes and have a great day!

Spams have things to make us curious. Chances are they have some interests in getting your attention for their benefit. When you see those, stay away from them.
