The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also described as the Eastern Garbage Patch or the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a gyre of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean estimated to be twice the size of Texas. The patch is characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of suspended plastic and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. Despite its size and density, however, the patch is not visible from satellite photography.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch has sometimes been described as a "trash island," but that's a misconception. Instead, it's like a galaxy of garbage, populated by billions of smaller trash islands that may be hidden underwater or spread out over many miles.
The attached photos and video should give you a better idea.

The Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch is an area in the north Pacific Ocean that collects most of the trash in the Pacific, due to the intersection of several major currents. The amount of trash floating in the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch is said to be twice the size of Texas. I learned all about it a year and a half ago, when I wrote a page on it for Mahalo!

Here is a picture of bunny's friend Al. I told Al not to eat any plastic when he swam past the garbage patch, but he just couldn't resist the plastic bag he found. Bad Al. No!

Wow! I had no idea what the answer was but recently heard a tidbit about the Garbage Patch so wanted to know the answers given. I was very shocked about this and hope that others are too. This is a disgrace on our beautiful planet and yet another low point for the human race. I recycle everything and was surprised to learn that only 5% of the earth's plastics are recycled ! Thank you Mahalo for this platform. Aside from answering questions I have been reading and learning from many others. This was a great question !
