Also try boiling or burning rosemary twiglets or pine needles or a lemon. Also open windows and doors for some time for a bit of draft. Incense sticks or cones are very nice too as is natural essential oils in a burner. In very bad cases (I consider fried sardines or dog poo a reason), I make up a spray of water with a bit of white vinegar and spary curtains and even furniture or floor with a very, very fine spray setting. I have found that burning scented candles works well. You might also strike a few matches in the rooms where you find the odor offensive, the sulfur of the match seems to counteract the odor. We kept a box of matches in the bathrooms to help mask odors until our children became old enough to realize that they were in there then, we removed them for safety.
