What is nitroglycerin mediated dilation?

Medically, nitroglycerin is used as a heart medication. Its principle effect is vasodilation (it expands blood vessels to make them wider), to help with chest pain (angina pectoris) among other things.

More specifically, it does this since nitroglycerin is rapdily converted to NO (nitric oxide), which is the principle vasodilator. NO has many other bodily functions as well, including being involved in male erection (look up Sildenafil).

Actually nitroglycerin releases NO, it doesn't convert to NO.
