what is a good back up solution or software to use if I have the WD external drive. Don't want to use time machine cause have issue

I'd recommend Acronis True Image Home.
I regularly use it to make complete backups of my work laptop hard drive onto my external USB drive. It's simple to use, and you can easily browse for and restore individual files as well as an entire disk image if necessary.

check out carbonite, but not sure if it is only for pc. it's an online backup, unlimited storage for a yearly price.
