Don't forget the Hummer's origins during the first Gulf War. It was considered to be about halfway between the Jeep and the tank. When it was first sold to the general public, the reaction was mostly "who in the world would want one of those?" Among the original Hummer buyers was Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Or perhaps they just want another luxury brand produced in China.

It's not "China" buying it. Any more than when IBM buys a company in China it's the "United States" buying it. It's a normal business decision when one company buys another. Sometimes those turn out to great decisions, other times lousy ones.

Maybe they think they can do something with the brand, or the distibution chain. Maybe they think that businesses they already have will fit nicely together with Hummer, and they'll be able to make more money when combined. We'll see if they're right or wrong, But that's no different than when Time Warner and AOL get together, or Daimler and Chrysler.

You're right, Philipy. There are probably other reasons involved. I just chuckle, because I do remember when Hummers were first produced for sale to civilians, and the similar reaction of disbelief--it was akin to the reaction people would have if tanks were suddenly made more "luxurious" with velvet seats and offered for sale to the public.
