I've used it, and it seemed just fine. It caught everything that was thrown my way while using it. I'm using AVG because I happened to snag the professional version as a free giveaway. Once it's up, if I haven't managed to snag another one, I might go back to Avira.
A lot of people also like Avast, but the very piratey voice announcing everything like a foghorn would startle me, even in the next room. Especially when it would detect something and the Red Alert sound from Star Trek would go off. The kids thought it was fun, and if I hadn't usually been holding something breakable when it went off, I would have, too.
Avira's fine.
