Just an everyday toolbox:
Phillips and Regular screw drivers (I usually start with a regular sized one, then add in an eyeglass sized phillips head for use on electronics/glasses). Hammer, tape measure, level, pliers(usually a regular set, and a pair of needle-nose), duct tape(you really can fix almost anything with it), and a pair of wire cutters. If you can, a decent, medium set of vice-grips is invaluable too. That should get you started. If you have the extra, I usually like to throw in a can of WD-40, a prybar of some kind, and a metal tube(to use as a cheater bar).

After this, I would get a wrench set(depending on what kind of car you have, you might want to get metric sized), and then follow with a socket set(3/8 or 1/2" drives. 1/4 is too easy to break). Down the road, you can pick up either a standard or metric set of wrenches/sockets depending on what you started with. A hacksaw and small drill would also be nice to get at this stage...and maybe a pair of bolt cutters.

With all that said, take your time getting the tools you need. Make sure that you spend the money to get a decent set(I'm a craftsman fan). IF you take care of your tools, they will take care of you when the time comes. I like craftsman because of the lifetime warranty and they have always done well for me...but, every man you talk to is going to have their favorite brand.
