Consider inviting business sponsors who have directly related products or services to the non-profit sponsoring the event. For instance, if the non profit is a children's medical group, approach pediatricians or drug store to sponsor the event. If the event is a charity which supports homeless shelters approach ciic organizations.

You might consider advertising or offering to design a coupon for their business in exchange for their sponsorship. In some cases you may be able to offer them the chance to have an information booth which would allow attendees to become more aware of their business and possibly create new customers for them.

Of the events I've attended, not including restaurants and caterers who are supplying good and literature, most have some sort of auction to get businesses involved. Services, art items, etc... to get their name out as well as get attendees interested.
