The only thing stopping me from trying the buttermilk pancake recipe now is a lack of baking powder. Why does it need soda and powder???

Here's a recipe for buttermilk pancakes that doesn't need baking powder - just soda: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 tsp baking soda,½ tsp salt,1 egg, 1 ½ cups buttermilk, 2 tbsp butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla http://www.mahalo.com/how-to-make-buttermilk-pancakes
