My research is showing me that this is a rather complex topic. Hopefully the links I've found will help you on your way.

There are some basics. Many places require a PI to be licensed. You can expect to testify in court fairly regularly, and may or may not be allowed to carry a firearm.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition site provides much information on employment, earnings, training, and so on.
