Kitten brought in parakeet this morning. How much effort do I put into finding an owner? Do they want to know it got mauled as a plaything?

Put the word out like letting your neighbors know. May be the parakeet escaped from the cage and the owner is looking. May be you can put a picture in the area to find the owner. Then you can turn to humane society.
If you find the owner, it is best to let them know, how you got it/
