Is it a bad thing to go with California FairPlan home insurance? Why is it so much cheaper than say.. AllState, etc. ? It's for ...

If you compare it line by line with AllState I think you'll fine it's not that much cheaper. It only covers a very finite list of items. Simple things like break in's are not covered but usually are under say an AllState plan.

It also appears that with the reduced set of coverage they are hoping to get a larger customer base which allows them to offer cheaper rates as it mitigates possible spikes in claims.

At the end of the day make sure you read all the fine print. This is where the companies differ. Notice that lately AllState has been playing up the fact that they have lots of adjusters. It might be the case that even tho you have coverage throw California Fair Plan actually getting your claim check might take forever. You don't think about that kind of thing usually until after you really need the money.
