Welcome to Mahalo!
good question,
let me guess, you had McAfee or Norton.
First remove that program. An Expired Antivirus is as good as a Virus.

I use and recommend a program called Avira Antivir Personal. http://www.free-av.com/ Avira does offer a commercial or paid version, but after using it for a while, I couldn’t see any major differences, minus the popup. Avira does have a Pop Up ad that comes on when you update, but that’s the only drawback to this program, however, if you follow my directions below you’ll probably never see the popup. Sure, I’ll deal with a daily popup to have perhaps the Best antivirus in the world. Did I say Best? Yes, according to many reports Avira is one of the top three antivirus programs and features the easiest interface and features the most consistent scanning engine.

I wrote all about it on my blog:
Including how to set it up to UPDATE and SCAN AUTOMATICALLY.

Here's the link to download

http://free.avg.com/

AVG Free Anti Virus. It has been working on my computer. Also, my college makes us have an anti-virus program in order to sign onto the school network and when my Norton Anti-virus free trial ran out I was worried about what to use that would be acceptable and AVG was acceptable.

I use McAfee, which is excellent. It's not free for the general public, but it is if you're a Comcast customer.

If not, I would check with your ISP to see if they offer something similar. Good virus protection will generally cost you an initial investment on the software, and an ongoing subscription fee. If your ISP covers that, then use it.

Microsoft has launched a free beta antivirus solution as of today. Think they ditched windows one care for this free antivirus. I will be installing the beta on one of my xp and a win7 RC systems today.

AVG free edition is also good as mentioned by others. I use with AVG on two of win7 and two win xp systems along with Windows Defender for antispyware

AVG or the Microsoft ones mentioned above are great choices, along with Avast!
All free.

Also, make sure you install Windows Defender. It is the definitive AntiSPYWARE application. I've had better results with it than either SpyBot or AdAware. It's free from Microsoft.

Note that the free antivirus applications mentioned: AVG, Avast, AntiVir are all as good as, if not better than, commercial applications such as Nortons and McAfee.
