I would go ahead & use the balsamic vinegar, just maybe use a little less than the recipe calls for because balsamic is more rich & intense than wine vinegar. Balsamic isn't the same thing as wine vinegar, but it has a flavor profile that would work really well in a sticky onion marmalade and it will give you the same tartness that the wine vinegar would provide.
By comparison, ordinary vinegar may be too sharp compared to a milder wine vinegar and won't give you any of the flavor added by wine vinegar. Port & wine would add flavor but no tartness and may add too much sweetness (especially the port).
