I guess it is somewhat wierd but people name their children wierd names all the time so I guess its not very wierd but maybe a little strange.

No, Melanie was born in 1957, and The Birds released in 64 (Hitch & Tippi met in 61).
Don't forget Hitch used numerous female names beginning with an M (Marnie, Melanie, Mary, Madeleine, Margot, Marion, Margaret, ...). something to do with Mother?
