The oat fibers in oatmeal mix with cholesterol in the small intestine, then bind to the cholesterol molecules and carry it out of the body -- instead of it being absorbed into the blood.

Oatmeal seems to be most effective in lowering LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) levels. According to the studies in adults, LDL cholesterol may be lowered by 10 percent in some cases. In these studies, anywhere between 40 and 60 grams -- or roughly one bowl -- of oatmeal was consumed by each subject per day. The cholesterol lowering benefits of oatmeal is also dose-dependent. That is, the more oatmeal you eat, the lower your cholesterol will go.

The soluble fiber in it prevents a number of nutrients and factors from being absorbed by the body, including cholesterol.

Whether this is actually a good thing or not has been a matter of debate for years, no matter what the pop culture media says. There are many experienced doctors, scientists and pharmacists who have deep doubts about whether cholesterol is the enemy, or whether blaming cholesterol (which your body produces on its own) is like blaming firemen for fires. Blood cholesterol levels are not affected greatly by dietary cholesterol intake; but the body seems to produce more when a person is under stress or ill.

I would agree with this. However Quaker Oats will not.
