While I do agree that it is unlikely that zombie's will be able to launch a sneak attack and that being prepared for disaster is always a good thing, it is best to be prepared with the appropriate tools. As such I would recommend 'The Zombie Survival Guide' by Max Brooks as an important resource to have on hand.
In addition, we never know when the our robot overlords may arrive so it might also be a good idea to have on hand 'How to Survive A Robot Uprising: tips on defending yourself in the coming rebellion' by Daniel H. Wilson.
I have included links with additional information below.

Second step, always have a portable set of supplies ready so you can pick up and move to wherever you need to go. Make sure you have a few days food, water, and things like warm clothing, matches, a signal mirror, etc. Also, access to some means of defense would be beneficial as well (e.g. a gun, a baseball bat, or some kind of bludgeoning instrument. Keep in mind though that you are likely to be overwhelmed quickly, so your best option is to run.
Basically, things are going to be *crazy* for a while, think about what you would need if everything you knew went away and you only had your wits to survive.

That could only be helpful. You could keep it with your other "Go Bags" next to the duct tape and garbage sacks.

As I learned in Boy Scouts: be prepared. The first step is to be aware of your surroundings, know possible exits and entrances in the likely need to escape--don't back yourself into a corner! I wouldn't be concerned since zombies cannot sneak bacause they're always moaning. Unless you are listening loud music on your headphones, then yes, you are in trouble. So the best way to prepare is leaving your headphones at home.
