How do I know if my AC is broken or it's just missing freon? Is there a way to find out what's wrong without taking it to a shop?

Most shops will offer free diagnosis, call around and do it that way. If you get a low freon diagnosis, they'll quote you a price, and you can decline and research doing it yourself, or call around for other quotes now that you know what is wrong.
