I used to have hiccoughs all the time and learned the following bio-feedback technique to fix them:

0. Close your eyes (optional, but it helps concentrate)
1. Take full breath (deep, but not extremely deep)
2. Hold your breath
3. Concentrate on relaxing your diaphragm for 10 seconds
4. Exhale slowly while continuing to concentrate on your diaphragm

Repeat if it doesn't work but with practice this will usually work the first or second time. People are amazed when I start hiccoughing and just do this.

Hiccoughs or Hiccups are just a spasm in the diaphragm which is why the above technique works.

Things that I've tried that don't work, or work poorly:

1. Vinegar and brown sugar
2. Spoonful of brown sugar
3. Drinking from the far side of the glass
4. Drinking lots of water quickly

There are a few cures that work for me. Mostly, you want to get yourself breathing deeply and concentrated on something else. Here are my two favorites:
  • Take very deep (as deep as you can) breaths from your diaphragm, allowing your stomach to greatly expand.
  • Drink out of the far side of a cup of water (you'd be dipping your chin
into the cup and tilting your head down). Very effective in the
    breathing and concentrating.

My hubby suggested similar to me to take a deep breath and it does work for me...We usually bluff a person with hiccups in my tribe (Philippines) 'that they steal something although he/she didn't steal any...' when the person defends back him/her self unaware then the hiccup is over!

This is a cure I have never seen fail. Take four marachino cherries and put them on a toothpick. Then after exhaling, take all four into your mouth at once. The sugar rush will cure your hiccups at once.

Take about 10 very deep breaths and then hold your breath as long as you can. In most cases, this seems to disrupt the pattern enough that the hiccups stop.

I've also had success by eating a spoonful of sugar.

My wife has this a lot. She will actually hiccup in her sleep and keep on doing it. I have learned to make her get up and drink some water. Never has failed to cure her hiccups. At least for that night.

The one thing my mom always gave us to cure the hiccups was a spoon full of sugar. Mary Poppins says it helps the medicine go down, but TRUST me on this one...it cures the hiccups too! However, I don't recommend it if you're a diabetic! For my ex boyfriend, I could never get him to do it, so I made him lie upside down on his bed and drink water, and that seemed to help him...I'm still telling you though, the sugar is the best cure!

Right as you feel the urge to hiccup, take a big gulp of water.

Put a few dashes of Angostura Bitters on a lime wedge then suck on the lime wedge.
It's tad sour and bitter... but it does the trick.
(I actually enjoy the taste... I put bitters and lime in my ginger ale for a refreshing drink.)
