Here is a list of activities. Several of them are in Plano/Frisco/McKinney/Allen (North Dallas). The ones at the bottom are low cost, but this is a big list and includes things we like to do all over the Metroplex. We have done everyone of these at some time or another. Several of these are kid friendly. You will want to explore them on the web.
For North Dallas specifically I would recommend an evening strolling the streets of the Shops at Legacy (photo at bottom). Generally there are musicians and wine tasting at Cru makes for an enjoyable evening. You will also see the Angelika theatre and can walk around the fake lake near EDS Corporate campus and the Marriott.
Sunday brunch at Blue Mesa restaurant is good southwestern fare that includes Mimosas. Nearby is the sculpture park on the other side of the tollway from Ikea.
Some like Stonebriar Mall with a good movie theatre, but Willow Bend has an Apple store and the best kid's indoor play area if it is hot. You can also tour the Nieman Marcus or go to the restaurant on the 3rd floor for their signature popovers and chicken broth served with every lunch.
Below is the long list of Dallas (Many in N Dallas) activities and below that the list of inexpensive alternatives. Somewhere in them you will find an activity for every taste. Enjoy ~ we spent 5yrs putting it together in our local adventures.

Depends on what you like! There's a great Irish pub called Trinity Hall on Mockingbird near 75 that has live music most nights & great beers every night. http://www.trinityhall.tv/ The Dallas Symphony has a different show every night this weekend http://www.dallassymphony.com/Ticket/ProductionDetail.aspx?perf=11024&selected=619
