In 1971, Tom Fogerty left the group. The band continued as a trio and cut Mardi Gras "referred to as the worst record ever made by a major band." (1.) The group disbanded on October 16, 1972.

Tom Fogerty died in Sept 1990. Creedence Clearwater Revival was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 on the first ballot. Stu Cook and Doug Clifford toured in the late 1990's as Creedence Clearwater Revisited, performing CCR classics, but a 1997 injunction by John Fogerty forced them to change their band's name. John Fogerty continues to perform and retains his iconic stature.

Tom Fogerty left the band in 1971 to record a few lackluster solo records. After he left, the band remained a trio consisting of John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook. The three released CCR's final album Mardi Gras in April of 1972, to poor reviews. Jon Landau of Rolling Stone called it, "the worst album I have ever heard from a major rock band." After a final 2 month, 20-date U.S. tour, the band finally disbanded on October 16, 1972.
Jonh Fogerty is the only member who gain success solely after CCR.
