Experienced captain prevents catastrophe
"Captain pilot Arısan, who lost his life in the accident, was the one who ensured that the THY aircraft, which experienced a technical malfunction, was landed tail-end first. By doing so, Arısan prevented a probable explosion from taking place had the plane landed nose first."

"AMSTERDAM - A Turkish Airlines jetliner crashed into a muddy field Wednesday while trying to land at Amsterdam's main airport, but 125 of the 134 people on board survived. The nine dead included both pilots.

The Boeing 737-800, en route from Istanbul to Amsterdam, broke into three pieces when it hit the ground about two miles short of a runway at Schiphol Airport at 10:31 a.m. local time. The fuselage split in two, close to the cockpit, and the tail broke off.

But the wreckage didn't burn and scores of people walked away from it."

"A Turkish pilots' group claims turbulence from a large plane landing at Amsterdam airport may have caused the crash of a Turkish Airlines flight in which nine people died.

Turkey Airline Pilots' Association Secretary-General Savas Sen said late Friday that a large Boeing 757 had landed at Schiphol Airport two minutes earlier. Sen said that plane most likely created "wake turbulence" that hampered the Turkish aircraft's landing."
