I don't think that was the reason. The timing just doesn't make much sense. Twitter didn't really take off until after jaiku was acquired in October 2007. I think they probably bought it as a competing product but quickly realized the boat had sailed. That even tho twitter had not exploded it already had a very serious core of people. These people were already committed to the the platform and were unwilling to move.
