Those culinary curators over at Epicurious have a great video:

Here is a step-by-step:
http://www.ehow.com/how_4703498_light-charcoal-grill.html

If you don't want to use lighter fluid or BBQ a lot, a chimney is a good investment:

Basically, with a chimney, you light a piece of newspaper (or whatever) and stick it in with the charcoal and wait for it to get going. In contrast, with lighter fluid, you spray some on, stand back, and toss a match at it to get it going.

Thanks Orange... I'm a fan of the Chimney too.

Mmm... all this bbq talk is going to result in some steaks for dinner tonight.

no I use a smoke box in my gas grill for smoking. It doesn't turn out half bad. I have about 3-4 different types of wood

The most common way is what is call Pyraid style is what every typical american uses. simply stack your charcoal in a pyramid form so oxygen can travel throught the charcoal throw in some lighter fluid add a match and boom...well not boom but you know what i mean. below are a few alternative ways.

First video is an example of pyramid/volcano style

pyramid of briquettes soaking each layer w/ lighter fluid then light 4 corners

If you're not into using lighter fluid, I recommend using some tightly twisted paper under/btwn briquette pyramid layers.

I would like to add (as a burn unit RN) please do not EVER use gas or kerosene or diesel fuel or anything remotely like that to speed up or start your fire, whether for grilling or burning brush or burning trash or whatever. If you must make the process go faster, USE LIGHTER FLUID. It is designed to burn much more safely. I have treated probably hundreds of men & boys (yes burn pts are 90% male) who got burnt hurrying their fires along with gas or diesel or whatever--many who swear their way is safe and they've been doing it that way for decades--but I've never treated anyone who was using plain old lighter fluid.

The best way is to use lighter fluid but carefully because
it only takes a little to start your grill. Thank you
