Of the list of foreign born players I think I still have to go with Dirk Nowitzki. While guys like Steve Nash and Yao Ming are certainly talented foreign born players, but Nowitzki has been in the league since the 1998-99 season and after putting up unimpressive numbers in his first season, he has spent the rest of his career being a very good all around player.

It’s not just the fact that he averages over 25 points a game most seasons, or the fact that he comes darn close to 10 rebounds a game each year, but he also dishes out quite a few assists for a big man, and even most impressive is the fact that he is a dead eye shooter from beyond the three point arc. Nash is certainly one of the best point guards in the game, but I just feel like Dirk brings more to his team that couldn’t be replaced.

There have been a significant number of international players who have made a big impact in the NBA. I will list my top four and interestingly, they all play different positions. I have a shooting guard, a center, a forward and a point guard.

4. Manu Ginobili, shooting guard of the San Antonio Spurs. He's the ultimate sixth man, but plays 29 minutes per game, just about as much as a starter would. He is a terrific outside shooter, scored 16.5 points per game and added 5 assits and 4 rebounds per game as well. He's instant offense off the bench, a key component to any team.

3. Yao Ming, center for the Houston Rockets. Had Ming stayed healthy he could very well be elevated to the top of this list. He has tremendous size, great inside presence and a good touch on medium range jump shots. He's averaged 19 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks per game for his career.

2. Dirk Nowitzki, forward for the Dallas Mavericks. Nowitzki can do it all. He has the size of many centers at 7 ft, 245 pounds and the range of a shooting guard. He averaged 25 points and 8 rebounds per game in 2010, while shooting 42% on three point field goals and 91.5% from the free throw line. Add in 1 block and 3 assists per game as well. He's a complete all around player.

1. Steve Nash, point guard for the Phoenix Suns. Nash will go down as one of the best point guards in NBA history. He's the ultimate floor general. Besides that, he's a great offensive player. In 2010, Nash average 16.5 points, 11 assists and 3 rebounds per game. He shot 51% from the floor, 43% from 3pt range, and 94% from the free throw line. His career numbers are staggering, 15 points per game, 8 assists per game, 43% on 3pt field goals and 90% from the foul line. He is the best international player in the game today and of all time.

When I look at the list of international National Basketball Association players you supplied it certainly includes the four players I would consider the cream of the crop. I would rate them as follows:

4 – Yao MingChina - Houston Rockets – Although he can put up impressive stats and is a game changer, the man just cannot stay healthy. If you are not on the court, you simply have no impact on the game. I am interested in watching this center when he returns to see if ever fully recovers from the problems he has with his feet. If he does he may develop into a truly dominant player. Through 7 years in the NBA, Yao has average 19 points and 9 rebounds per game. He is also an excellent free throw shooter.

3 – Pau GasolSpainLos Angeles Lakers – A tremendous scorer, rebounder and defender. He has the size and the mobility to remain a star for a long time. My question here will be, can he co-exist on the same team for any length of time with Kobe Bryant? He has averaged 9 rebounds and almost 19 points a game over a nine year career and also chips in with 3 assists per game. He also has missed significant time to injury, but not nearly as much as Ming.

2 – Dirk NowitzkiGermanyDallas Mavericks – Just the best all-around import player in the NBA. He has appeared in 9 consecutive All Star games, averages 23 points per game along with 8 ½ rebounds. He also contributes almost 3 rebounds per game and is an excellent shooter from the field and free throw line.

1 – Steve NashCanadaPhoenix and Dallas – Just one of the premier point guards of all time and the only player on my list not a 7 footer. Has a career average of almost 17 points and 9 assists per game. He is also a lifetime 90% shooter from the free throw line and nearly 50% from the field; an excellent mark for a guard. He has appeared in 7 All Star games and has played 14 seasons in the league. Even at 35 years of age he averaged 18 points and 12 assists during the 2010 season. He is also a tow-time MVP.

So my selection for the best international player is “STEVE NASH” !
