The most significant differences between horses and zebras are due to the extensive domestication of horses. The details of their appearance and behavior have been selected for by humans, to meet human needs, which are quite different from the needs of zebras in the wild.

Zebras (three distinct species, Equus zebra, E. burchelli, and E. grevyi) and domesticated horses (E. ferus caballus) are among several modern species of equids (horse-like animals), along with donkeys (asses) and a few others. All have the same basic form, with only slight skeletal differences. However, the genetic differences between different species are great enough that the hybrid offspring from a cross between two species (male donkey x female horse = mule) are almost always sterile. The most significant differences between horses and zebras are due to the extensive domestication of horses. The details of their appearance and behavior have been selected for by humans, to meet human needs, which are quite different from the needs of zebras in the wild.
